Prayagraj to boost tourism with Buddha Vihar

Prayagraj aims to become a top spiritual and cultural tourism hub with two major projects: a Buddha Vihar (Buddhist Monastery) and a Senior Citizen Centre. These plans aim not only to bring in more visitors but also to make life better for the locals, showing the city’s joint focus on keeping its culture and helping the community.

The Buddha Vihar, set for construction in the Naini-Arail area with a budget of Rs 2.5 crore, will honour the region’s historic link to Emperor Harshavardhan. It will also offer pilgrims a place for peace, meditation, and cultural learning.

Plans include a meditation hall, a space for Buddhist lessons, a big entry gate, and walls painted with Jataka tales. These stories tell the life and teachings of Lord Buddha.

The project is expected to make Prayagraj more attractive to Buddhist pilgrims who travel between Kaushambi and Sarnath. Officials said work will begin once the state tourism office approves.

This project builds on the success of the Maha Kumbh 2025, which brought a record 66 crore pilgrims and visitors to the city. While the event showed Prayagraj’s strong pull, many visitors did not stay for long.

With new sites like the Buddha Vihar, tourism leaders hope to get people to spend more time in the city and strengthen its role as both a travel stop and a spiritual centre.

Senior Citizen Centre to enhance local community life

In addition, a Senior Citizen Centre is being built at Shaheed Chandra Shekhar Azad Park inside the Gymkhana Club area. The project costs Rs 2.75 crore and is run by Prayagraj Smart City Limited. After some early approval delays, the work is now moving ahead without problems.

The centre will have wellness activities like yoga and meditation made for the elderly. It will also include shared spaces for rest and spiritual growth. The project is expected to finish in six months. It aims to give both physical and emotional support to the city’s elderly.
